How to Get a Good Grade in a Distance Education Class
Many students have a common concern about distance education classes. Specifically, they are concerned about grading. Tests and quizzes are, of course, very different in a distance education class than they are in a traditional classroom where there is an instructor or a professor available to monitor all of the students.
Yet, distance learning programs have developed methods to help ensure fair grading and students who are interested in participating in distance learning courses will benefit from understanding those methods.
Some distance learning courses regularly give short quizzes that are designed with a tight time limit so that students do not have the opportunity to look up information in their course materials or online. Other courses give longer tests that are designed to be open book and focus more on the student’s analytical skills than memorization skills. Finally, some courses choose to grade students on written essays or papers rather than quizzes or tests in order to circumvent any honesty problems in grading student work.
Of course, there are some old fashioned educational truths that remain applicable to distance learning classes. Students who study hard and participate in class are more likely to get better grades than students who do not study or participate. Also, the honor method remains important. To some extent, every distance education class depends on the students to follow the rules with little to no monitoring. However, students who follow the rules and are diligent in their schoolwork are likely to excel in this type of educational program.
