How to Apply for College Admission

Every year, college applicants, rush to their mailboxes in the hopes of finding the coveted “fat envelope” that signals college admission rather than the single sheet of paper that signals rejection. However, long before the envelope arrives the applicants have started the college admissions process.

The first step in the college admissions process is to contact the admissions offices at the colleges where you are interested in applying. This can be done online, over the telephone or in person. Colleges employ admission counselors to help applicants with the admissions process.

Each college has its own set of guidelines and requirements for applicants so it is important that you comply with the school’s specific requests. Often, those requests include a personal statement, previous transcripts and letters of recommendation. The requests may also include SAT or ACT scores if you are seeking a degree and are not transferring credits from another institution. Finally, almost all colleges require an application of some kind that has basic biographical information it. Many, but not all, colleges accept the common application form and they all accept their own application form.

If you are not seeking a degree, most of the college admissions requirements are waived. Non matriculated students are usually able to audit classes with little paperwork. Tuition and fees for students who wish to be admitted as a non matriculated students vary greatly among the colleges.

College admission is an individualized process that depends in part on the college’s rules and in part on the goals of the student who is seeking enrollment.
